Frequently asked questions

What is Stomped?+

Stomped is a free fog-of-war exploration app for iPhone. Your whole map starts hidden under fog, and as you physically walk, run, or bike, you permanently reveal the places you've actually been, turning real-world movement into a personal map of your explored world.

How does Stomped work?+

As you move, the app snaps your location to small hexagon tiles on the map and clears the fog over each one you pass through. Revealed tiles are permanent, so over days and weeks your blank map fills in to show everywhere you've explored, with a live “% stomped” for each neighborhood and city you move through.

Is Stomped free?+

Yes. Stomped is completely free to download and use on the App Store. You create a free account with an email and password so your map can be restored across devices.

Is there an Android version of Stomped?+

Stomped is currently available only on iPhone via the App Store (“Stomped: Unlock Your City”). There is no Android version yet.

Is my location data private? Where does my GPS data go?+

Stomped only stores and syncs coarse, anonymized hexagon tile IDs (roughly 47-meter cells), never your precise latitude and longitude, and never sends raw location to any third party.

What counts as “stomped”? Do I have to walk somewhere to reveal it?+

A tile is “stomped” only when you physically pass through it on foot, by run, or by bike, with a real-time GPS fix. You can't reveal places by tapping the map, importing routes, or driving fast through gaps, so your map reflects ground you've genuinely covered.

Can I add friends and compare who's explored more?+

Yes. You can add friends with an invite link and compare your coverage of each neighborhood and city, including who has stomped more of a given place. Friends only ever see how much of an area you've covered, never which specific tiles you unlocked or where you've actually been.

Does Stomped work in the background or when my phone is locked?+

While the app is open, it keeps revealing tiles after you lock the screen or switch apps. Fully closed-app background capture is an optional opt-in feature you can enable in Settings (it asks for “Always” location); it's off by default, so the standard experience only tracks while you're using the app.

Does Stomped work offline?+

Yes. Stomped is offline-first. Tiles you reveal are saved on your device immediately, so you can explore with no signal and your progress syncs to your account automatically the next time you're back online.

How is Stomped different from Strava?+

Strava is about workouts, segments, route maps, and athletic performance. Stomped isn't a fitness tracker for individual activities; it's a single ever-growing personal map of everywhere you've ever been, where the goal is revealing fog and increasing your coverage of real neighborhoods and cities over time.
